What is the interactive process?

When an employee becomes unable to perform the essential job functions of the currently-held position as a result of a covered disability, whether permanent or temporary, the District will engage in efforts to determine whether a reasonable accommodation will allow the employee to perform the essential job functions of their position. 

These efforts are referred to as the "interactive process:" a timely, good faith process that includes a discussion between the employer and the employee for the purpose of arriving at a mutually beneficial arrangement for a work schedule that meets the needs of the employee and the employer. The discussion may include the proposal of alternatives by the employee and the employer and the employer may request documentation from a health care provider.
